WCJ Ltd were engaged by the London Borough of Hackney to provide consultancy services as part of a comprehensive refurbishment and alteration project to the existing library and adjoining battery storage buildings.
Designed by Edwin Cooper in 1912 and opened in 1914, the library building is now statutorily listed.
In order to provide a modern library facility, the project entailed the design and construction of a new 3 storey, steel framed extension above the existing battery storage area.
The new extension will provide supplementary presentation, reading and staff facilities and will include a new passenger lift and staircase.
In order to minimise the impact of the new building on the existing listed structure, the design of the new extension required new structural components to be discreetly interwoven through existing structural elements.
