WCJ Ltd were appointed by Heythrop College to provide structural engineering consultancy services for the construction of an external lift shaft.
The new lift shaft comprises a steel framework constructed over six storeys, built off a new reinforced concrete base. The lift shaft has been enclosed by cavity brickwork to match the exterior of the existing college buildings.
The scope of works entailed forming new openings at each floor level and included underpinning work to adjacent structures in order to accommodate construction of the lift shaft base.
Working space for construction operations was restricted and required very careful design and detailing to ensure components could be delivered and erected in manageable sections.
The building remained in use throughout the works and this required close liaison between members of the project team to minimise disruption to students and staff at the College.
