Single storey basement extensions have become the norm in affluent parts of London, but one property owner had a more ambitious scheme.
Wyatt Carruthers Jebb were appointed to undertake the structural engineering of a three storey basement construction. Such an ambitious scheme comes with significant technical complications, but to Wyatt Carruthers Jebb this is all in a day’s work.
“To achieve the construction of new three storey basement below an existing house requires careful structural design and sequencing” says John Wyatt, Managing Director of Wyatt Carruthers Jebb. “We have undertaken several basement constructions in the past and when contacted by the Client to design a three storey basement we were excited about meeting this new challenge”
Basements excavations are nothing new to Wyatt Carruthers Jebb. In fact they have been undertaking this kind of work since the company was formed in 1990. “Achieving an excavation of this kind requires a sound understanding of basic structural principles” says John “In this case we adopted piles and the top down construction technique”
The design required both temporary works design and structural engineering of the final structure, careful sequencing and above all attention to detail. Local buildings were monitored for movement using lasers. The work has now been completed and Wyatt Carruthers Jebb Ltd are now looking at their next big challenge.
